Margin Requirements
& Leverage Explained

Understand how margin and leverage work together to give you access to larger trading positions while managing the risks of leveraged trading.

THE BASICS

What is margin?

Margin is the amount of money you need to have in your trading account to open and maintain a leveraged position.

Rather than depositing the full value of a trade, margin allows you to access a larger position by providing only a fraction of the total trade value.

Margin is your trading requirement

The higher the leverage available, the lower the initial margin required to open a position.

LEVERAGED TRADING

What is leverage?

Leverage enables you to put up only a fraction of the deposit required to access a much larger trade size.

30:1 Leverage
3.33% Margin Required
$1 Controls $30

Leverage can magnify both potential profits and potential losses. It is important to understand the risks before trading leveraged products.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

How does leverage work?

Let’s look at a typical EUR/USD trade. To buy or sell a position worth 100,000 EUR/USD without leverage would require the trader to provide the full value of the position.

With 30:1 leverage, or a 3.33% margin requirement, only approximately $3,333.33 of the trader’s funds would be required to open a $100,000 EUR/USD position.

EUR / USD TRADE EXAMPLE
Full Position Value $100,000
Leverage 30:1
Margin Required $3,333.33
UNDERSTANDING THE RISK

Magnified profits
and losses

While only a fraction of the full trade value may be required to open a leveraged position, any profit or loss is calculated against the full value of the position.

$10 Approximate profit or loss per one-pip move on a 100,000 EUR/USD position.

This illustrates how leverage can magnify the impact of relatively small price movements on your account balance.

MANAGING YOUR ACCOUNT

Margin requirements

It is essential to maintain the minimum margin requirements for all open positions at all times.

Monitoring your margin level can help you understand how much available equity remains in your account and help you manage your open positions more effectively.

Monitor your margin level regularly

Maintain sufficient account equity

Understand your leverage before opening a position

Consider the impact of market volatility

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Margin close out
& liquidation

If your margin level falls to or below the applicable margin close-out level, open positions may be closed to help limit further losses.

You should not expect to receive a margin call or warning before positions are closed. We strongly recommend monitoring your margin level carefully through the trading platform.

IMPROVING YOUR MARGIN LEVEL

Take control of your
available margin

If your margin level is approaching a critical level, you may be able to improve your margin position by taking one or more of the following actions.

01

Deposit funds

Add additional funds to increase the equity available in your account.

02

Close positions

Close or partially close open positions to reduce margin requirements.

03

Manage risk

Use appropriate risk-management tools and monitor market conditions.
